thoughts on this course!

Last year as I was choosing my courses I only picked this course because I thought it was the only art course that I would not do miserably in and I was right! I enjoyed this course and I'm glad I took it because I learned some cool new stuff (and I won't need to worry about taking a grade 9 or 10 art credit in a 5th year, that'd be embarrassing). I learned things that are becoming more common in today's society and it is good to have background knowledge on the things we worked with and investigated in this course not only for your own good but for future job opportunities. I really enjoyed creating all of my work for this course but I also had a great time on the trip I went on for a quest unit. I had a great time down at the Harbourfront and I learned a lot of cool stuff!

First project: multiple exposer. I had always seen people do stuff like this, with more than one image of themselves. At first I was dumbfounded. Then I realized they used photoshop but I still had no idea how they did it. I was excited to learn how and very happy to learn that it wasn't even that hard to do. The only thing I regret about this project is not checking the modes on my camera before hand... turns out there is an anti-shake/blur mode type of thing. So my pictures wouldn't have been so blurry. But other than that I think it was a great success.

Second project: circus collage. This was fun to do and I learned a few cool tricks in photoshop but it was almost a bit too much for me. I was getting a little stressed because I thought that it was a mess. Nothing related to each other and there were so many colours. But then, I put my mild OCD aside and realized, it's a collage, that's how it's supposed to look! Especially since I described myself as a clown, it is allowed to be wild and outrageous. How many perfectionist clowns do you know?

Third project: pattern and inspirational person. I never would have thought I'd be so satisfied with my pattern! Like I mentioned before I like for everything to have a certain order about them so obviously I was stressing when I had to use three random objects to create one image. Although I got some pretty random objects (a soccer shoes?! thanks Cormac..) I was very happy with my final product. I was able to create something that looked like a butterfly using soccer shoes, bowling pins and slices of watermelon! I think that my pattern was also appropriate for my inspirational person: P!NK. The colours were obviously bang on (I'm hoping you know what colour a watermelon is) so I think the pattern suited my person. I got a great, eccentric image of P!NK and I'm very happy with the final product. I just got it back today and it was cool to see on paper. Although this project seemed easy enough I'm grateful for Eryk's help! Poor guy, he did his like five different times!!! Darn those slow computers! ;)

Last but not least: I AM video. My partner for this project was Mandy, thank goodness! I can't imagine working on something like with anyone else. Not only did I learn a lot from her but she was great to work with. We had many similar ideas and we were easily able to put them together to fit both of our wants and the overall image that we wanted our video to have. Mandy was the one to choose the song for the video, The Fear by Lily Allen. It was actually very random for her to pick that song, sure it was her newest single but Mandy just suggested it out of the blue. Anyways, I guess it's always good to go with your gut because our video wouldn't be the same without that song. The only diffucult thing about making this video was finding a good photographer. Since we both wanted to be in most of the pictures together we needed someone to photograph us. We tried to explain what we wanted to both my younger brothers but that didn't turn out so well. Regardless we made it work. But for the last several pictures at the end of the video we got one of my best friends to take the pictures for us and she did a great job, thank goodness! I really enjoyed working on this, my only regret is not having it in the Art Show. This was by far my favourite assignment from the whole course!

mw art show 09

When someone mentions this years Mary Ward art show, two things come to mind: 1. it was so cooooooool!, 2. I WISH I WENT EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK.
Unfortunately I only went to the art show on the Friday afternoon right before my soccer game, so I didn't even have much time. But I really liked everything about it! I think that the theme was great. I said to someone that last years art show probably wasn't as cool because the theme wasn't as cool but apparently the art shows are always amazing at Mary Ward. I'm definitely going for the next two years if not more. I am glad that I could be a part of such a great showcase of Mary Ward talent. I had my work for this course in the art show and I helped take it down. Next year I will definitely help set it up. I can't wait to see how it comes together. It's such an amazing transformation!

So, some of my favourite things in the art show were, the grade 10 design train things, they were so cool, the huge skull guy in the art room, the dresses done by the grade 11 design students and the self portraits with the picture underneath them. I wasted a lot of time just staring at one trying to find the little stuffed toy in that collage of cartoons, turns out there was no plushie! I also loved the grade 10 comm/media unit 16 videos! They were all really good and it was interesting to see people's different approaches and interpretation of the assignment. Unfortunately, Mandy and I only finished our video two days ago and it wasn't in the art show :(.

I did not even get a chance to go into tech and look at the work done there! Next year I will definitely explore every inch of the art show and hopefully get one of those cool tshirts. $5 was more than worth it and I would recommend the Mary Ward art shows to anybody, I can't wait for next years!

Bye bloggers, ttyn. :)

technologicccc

This video kind of put things into perspective for me. I never really thought about things this way until I watched this clip. My favourite part of this clip was the part about airplanes. I have been on an airplane 4 times in my life but I can only remember 2 of them. I remember being pretty frustrated because we did wait for about 40 minutes and my head was really hurting when we were landing on the way home from Florida. I found what Louis C. K. had to say really funny but it had a lot of truth to it. We take technology, for granted. Airplanes was a great example because it did not even occur to me that an airplane was a form of technology.
I think it would be extremely hard for me to live my life without technology. I do almost all of my homework on my laptop, I listen to my iPod several times each day and if for some reason my laptop isn't working or I'm "too lazy" to turn it on I go on Facebook on my iPod. I text people on my cell phone all day long and I'm always calling people. I think I do this because I don't like feeling alone. I always want to be in touch with someone, even if it's just my mom, just because I'm used to always being connected to people in one way or another. Usually I do not watch much television but when I want to I get really upset if I can't because when I'm in the mood to do something, I really want to do it. That's why when the power goes out in my house, it's probably the worst thing that could happen to us. If we wanted to call for a pizza we would have to use the phone in the kitchen (it's not cordless, and it has terrible reception) and everyone just ends up all frustrated because my dad yells at us because he can't hear a thing that the guy is saying on the other end of the phone. Good thing we don't have those phones from the stone age that Louis C. K. was talking about, because I love Pizza Nova.
Anyways back to the point, I think it was easier for people to live without technology before because they were not accustomed to it in the first place. They did not have easy access to all the things that we do. In a sense, I think this generation has a bit too much, and many children are growing up not being thankful for what they have, not realizing that their parents grew up with less than half the things they take for granted now.
Now, on the topic of new technology, I'm not very creative so I can't exactly think of something like this on the spot but this week I was thinking about something new. I thought that it would be pretty cool if my graphing calculator could play the radio... or maybe (I just thought of this now) my iPod touch could have a graphing calculator application! That'd be pretty cool. Anyways, while I was thinking aloud about this cool calculator my friend told me that her graphing calculator actually has an address book and a calender.. I'm not sure why you would want those things on a calculator but okaaay...

Anyways, I guess thats all for now! Only one blog left!! :)

Cell Phone Manners

This is not a topic I think about often but when I do I usually end up questioning the nerve of many people. I'll start this post with the 5 rules I have come up with:
1. If you are alone with someone do not make a call unless you ask for permission first. I think it is acceptable to text but no calls. If someone is calling you ask the person you are with if they mind if you answer your call. It can be really awkward to be the person just sitting there while you have no idea who your friend is talking to. Thank goodness not many people I know do this.
2. You're at a party/event at someone else's home and you seclude yourself from the evenings events in order to use the phone all night... This is extremely rude and it makes everyone else think you are not enjoying yourself and would like to be elsewhere.
3. There should be no cell phone use during church, dinner or a movie. Big nono. During times like these your phone should be off or on silent. You can talk to your friends/family later, now is not the time. This is very inappropriate.
4. Using your phone while driving. This can affect multiple parties. If you are in the car with others are you being rude to them by a. ignoring them b. putting them in danger because you are not paying full attention to the road. You are also putting everyone else that you are driving around in danger.
5. During meetings, for school clubs or for work or during class. It is rude but it will only hurt you in the long run because people with look at your negatively and won't take you seriously.

Since cell phones are such a huge part of our life it is easy to forget rules like these because we take our phones for granted and we over use them even when we do not have to. It happens everyone once in a while but you can tell who is oblivious to common courtesy of cell phone use.

I know for a fact that I would complain everyday if I got my cell phone taken away from me. I feel like I wouldn't be able to live without it and I know many people, young and old, feel the same way as I do. Also, I think that cell phones may be another reason teenagers get such a bad reputation. Older people feel like we are always on them and they more likely to notice a lack of manners when people are using cell phones. I'm sure that more older people than young notice things such as cell phone edict. But they do not understand how addicting they can be. I have been growing up in a generation where everyone is constantly connected via phones, internet and so on and it would be extremely difficult for me to give up these connections. I love being able to talk to my friends and family whenever I feel like it. And of course they are handy in emergencies!

Colossal University

For all of you that are yet to blog on this topic, I'll try and make this a little easier. I noticed some people have a blogged about Colossal U but they do not even fully understand the advertisements. I have a feeling most people who did so did not take the chance to visit the website provided. What I am about to tell you you may have already known, or you may not. I am doing this for those who did not know (and because well that is kind of the point of this blog, and I really want Unit 6 to be completed..): Colossal U is not real.

It took me a while to figure this out... I read some blogs making fun of the university saying no one is going to go there and those blogs confused me because I was pretty sure it was not real. I also read some great blogs that had a good grasp on what Colossal U was really advertising: Algoma University. Algoma U is the exact opposite of what Colossal U is advertising. They use those confusing advertisements for Colossal U to attract the attention to themselves. These ads will easily confuse most people and they will be interested to get to the real message behind those ads. In a society such as this it is very rare for people to reject the idea of individualism. Most post-secondary schools encourage and advertise variety at their school. Colossal U is a way of showing you how things should not be and that Algoma U guarantees they are not going to let all students turn out the same.

Algoma U takes a unique approach to advertise their school, it is very interesting but could be bad for them. I'm not sure whether most people are curious enough to get to the bottom of the mysterious Colossal U ads, many people these days are extremely lazy. Obviously Ms. Arturi isn't! :) Yaaay. But anyways, I'm sure they would not use the those advertisements for a long time if they were not working. This is an interesting concept and I hope it works for them.

Gaming Gone Wild!

I think this is a great topic for our blogs because it’s something everyone has an opinion on. I don’t play video games as much as I used to about 3 years ago but I still thoroughly enjoy them. But as I talk about my own opinion on video games I am probably going to contradict myself. So bear with me, and hopefully you’ll understand what I’m trying to say.

I don’t play video games as much as I used to about 3 years ago but I still thoroughly enjoy them. When I was 12 I used to be obsessed with this game called Harvest Moon for my GameCube. I wanted to buy all the different versions for every possible system. I bought a few of them but eventually I got older, and had better things to do than grow a virtual farm for 42 hours/week or more. In my house we have a GameCube, PS2, Nintendo DS, and a PSP. The most frequently used system is the PS2 (by my 9 year old brother, he just got a new game last night and he’s playing it right now). The rest of the systems aren’t used as much. My other brother (Cole, 13) begged for a PSP for his birthday in July and hardly ever uses it. This is the case for many kids in North America. They want all kinds of games but after a couple weeks the novelty wears off and the new game goes unnoticed. For this reason I don’t ask for any video games. I wouldn’t mind a Nintendo Wii but I know I wouldn’t use it very often so there isn’t much point in buying one. I play most video games on my iPod touch or on the computer. Usually the reason I play is because I can’t find anything else to do. Playing video games is not usually the first thing I think of doing. This being said, depending on the game, once I get started it’s hard to stop. That is what makes me believe it would be hard to get young people’s attention and encourage them to start playing sports, volunteering or working harder in school.

I think it’s important that young people know they shouldn’t be wasting so much time playing video games and it is very important to stay physically fit and work hard for school but with new systems such as the Wii, people are convinced they are getting a work out from this. One reason I think a lot of young people play video games is to escape from reality for a little bit; to forget about the pressures of a sports team or their academic lives. I think that is acceptable but it is important not to get carried away. You know you are playing video games way too much when getting to level 37 is way more important to you than getting an A on an essay worth 30% of your grade. As long as everyone knows their boundaries there should be no problem with video games.

The Campaign Trail

I think this advertisement is very effective. I thought it had a great message and I think it easily highlights many issues that Obama will have to be solving during his time as president. The issues highlighted in this advertisement are unemployment, war (in Iraq specifically), minimal health coverage, the diminishing economy and global warming.
At the end of the commercial when the first character finally answers the question, “WASSUP?” he says, “Change”. America is going through some great changes right now; they have their first black president (I am glad I am alive and that I am able to watch this unfold, so to speak) and they are going to be getting rid of a man who did nothing good for them these past few years (you can see the difference in the two commercials, eight years earlier everyone was a lot happier). Americans are hoping to turn everything right around and I hope they do to. I think President Obama is the right person to get them back on the right track. He must be so grateful to have been voted not just simply president of the United States but to be the first black man to be voted president. Barack Obama’s story is going to be so famous and is going to become such an important part of American history.
This advertisement shows everyone that President Obama knows what he is dealing with; he knows the things that people want him to fix. This advertisement shows that he, himself, is ready for a change and is glad to make it happen.

I don’t really know much about politics, I just think Obama is an innocent man that seems to really want what is best for the country. So to sum that all up I’m pro Obama and I think that advertisement probably spoke to a lot of people. I for one really enjoyed it. I found this picture and well, I guess not everyone feels the same way I do. To each’s own!
